Tip of the Week: Getting Tackled in a Triathlon Swim

February 2, 2009

Getting your head dunked underwater by some jerk that should be kicked out of triathlon racing is never a fun situation.  Usually, these idiots pick on people smaller and weaker than them.  Fortunately, the vast majority of athletes out there are courteous and well-mannered.  Unfortunately, all it takes is one bad apple to ruin your day.

So, what should you do if the worst happens?  These idiots typically grab your ankles and swim over top of you, or approach from the side and push you under by grabbing your shoulders.  Either way, you are going under the water and may be there for a little longer than you would like.

As hard as it may seem, the secret is to relax, protect your head with your arms, and wait for the idiot to pass.  It is all too easy to panic and take a breath when there is nothing but water around your head.  Also, when you panic your brain consumes large quantities of oxygen, which makes it more uncomfortable when you are stuck underwater.

If you feel like you are getting pulled under, do try and get a quick breath if you can.  But don’t try it if you risk inhaling water.  Raise your arms up around your head for your safety.  Then, let yourself relax, hold your breath and let it happen.  An event like this may seem like it takes an eternity, but it is usually over in several seconds.  When it’s over, just rise to the surface and keep on swimming.

Now you know what to do if the worst happens.  Such events like this are a rarity but there are a few horror stories out there.  Hopefully, it will never happen to you.  But if it does, hopefully it makes the experience a little less frustrating.  Until next time, happy training.
