Tip of the Week: Training Swimsuit Tip

December 8 , 2008

In training, you never want to wear lycra swimsuits or your racing gear.  The chlorine in most swimming pools eats away at these materials like acid, spoiling the color and ultimately making them see-through and un-useable.  Instead, you want to train everyday in polyester.  The material doesn’t dissolve nearly as quickly.  Actually, the stitching yarn wears away long before the material does!  I have personally kept a polyester swimsuit alive by manual sewing of the seams for 6 years.  I finally had to throw it out because the drawstring eroded away!  In years past, I used to train in lycra suits and I went through 3 or 4 pairs in a season, at significant expense.  Plus, if you train in baggy polyester, you feel great on race day when you put on that tight and fast lycra swimsuit!
