Decoding the Language of Swimming

I had a very interesting conversation last week with one of my co-workers in my day job who was born and raised in the country of Korea. Never spoke a word of English at the time, and being stuck in an English-only environment made his arrival a stressful affair. Now in his mid-thirties, he has found himself fluent (yet ever learning) in a new language and culture.

Learning English when Korean is all you know is a challenge. Not only do you have to learn a whole different set of words, the sentence structure is in reverse. In English, you state the subject, the verb, then the object (example: “I like you”). But in Korean, you state subject, object, then the verb.

You thought this was a website about swimming didn’t you? What gives? Because, like learning a new language, learning swimming is a challenge when running / walking is all you know. No only do you have to learn a whole new technique, good swimming requires your muscles to fire in a different pattern from most land based sports.

Q&A with Coach Dobko

Q: Would I gain anything if I did all my swim training in my wetsuit?

A: The short answer is that all you gain by training in your wetsuit is a worn out wetsuit. Seriously, triathlon wetsuits aren’t designed for everyday use. Even if you get lucky and the neoprene holds up, the chlorine in pool water will eat away at the soft stitching that holds the pieces together. This is how all of my wetsuits got destroyed after all of the experiments I have done on www.dobkanize.com! If used daily, your several hundred dollar wetsuit will become a ball of yarn with some neoprene strips in a matter of weeks.

Tip of the Week: Making Goggles Last Longer

It is frustrating when the chorine in pools eats away at yet another pair of expensive goggles. Ever wondered what will make those goggle straps last a little longer? The first thing you should do is wear them as loosely as possible, which is obvious. A looser fitting goggle is not going to stress out the rubber in the strap nearly as much, extending its life.
