Does a Blue 70 or Fast-Skin float?

You cannot help but notice these days that swimmers are putting in ever faster times.  In the triathlon world, the transformation is just as big.  Gone are the days when non-wetsuit racing involved wearing whatever you will have on for the rest of the race.  Many competitors race in Fast-Skins, or more recently, the Blue Seventy swimsuit.  These suits make you faster, and people who wear them claim that they feel like they are floating on top of the water in comparison to a regular swimsuit.  But just because they think the suit is making them float better, is it?

Q&A with Coach Dobko

Q: Sometimes my arms will go numb when I start to get up to 500 yards of continuous swimming. Is my technique that bad? A small break will return the circulation. Any thoughts?

A: I cannot think of anything related to technique that can cause numbness in the arms while swimming. If your shoulders are injury-free, the freestyle movement should not be pinching any nerves. But if you are injured, weird things can happen. I am not a physician, so I recommend you get checked out if you suspect injury.

Tip of the Week: Weight Training

Weight training is a great way to increase your swimming speed and break through a barrier or swimming time that you’ve been stuck at for awhile. The added strength allows you to pull through the water with greater force, and be able to sustain that force for a longer period of time. Any weight training program is better than none.
