Should Women Pace a Triathlon Swim Differently from Men?

As a demographic, the participation of women in the sport of triathlon has increased in recent years. Here in the Midwestern United States, women’s triathlon races are getting more and more competitive at all levels of the sport, from the weekend warrior up to the elites. One of the things that shocked us was that over half of the athletes coached with Dobkanize over the past year were women. Q&A with Coach Dobko

Q: I keep swallowing water whenever I swim. It happens all the time and is extremely frustrating. Is there something I can do to make this go away?

A: Taking a lungful of water in the pool or the lake is a horrible experience. It is something that should be avoided at all costs. When it happens on race day, it can take you right out of the race, especially if it happens early on. So here’s something simple you can do to reduce the likelihood of making your lungs into gills. When you turn your head sideways to breathe, make sure you twist your lips upwards as high as you can. You are doing it right if no one can see your front teeth.

Tip of the Week: Getting Tackled in a Triathlon Swim

Getting your head dunked underwater by some jerk that should be kicked out of racing is never a fun situation. Usually, these idiots pick on people smaller and weaker than them. Fortunately, the vast majority of athletes out there are courteous and well-mannered.

So, what should you do if the worst happens? These idiots typically grab your ankles and swim over top of you, or approach from the side and push you under by grabbing your shoulders. Either way, you are going under the water and may be there for a little longer than you would like.
