Dolphin Dives 101

This article covers everything about dolphin dives, in much detail. For those who dont know, dolphin diving is the act of pushing forward off the lake bottom. It is commonly done by the elite amateurs and pros at the start and finish of a triathlon swim. It may look as simple as pushing off and letting your arms fly in the air, but theres a lot more to it. Included is a discussion on when dolphin dives are appropriate, how many to do, the techniques involved and the benefits. Measured benefits you gain and energy expended is the subject of a whole other article.

Q&A with Coach Dobko

Q: : I am in my early 20s and come from a running background. My swim is decent but needs work and I have no competitive swimming experience. What do I need to do to make it to the pros?

A: In a word, time. Swimming is tough to learn if you havent been doing it your whole life. Achieving swimming skill to become an elite amateur is something that is attainable in a year if you are fit and already a super-talented biker or runner. Making pro is a whole other matter. I have observed athletes with college running experience hit 20-minutes for a 1500 meter swim with wetsuit, within a year. These athletes were all extremely dedicated, trained right and did the right techniques, all the time.

Tip of the Week: How to Hold a Kick Board

Here is how you need to hold a kick board so that you dont sink. The round end should be facing forward. The curved (or flat) end should be positioned closer to your chest. Your arms should extend over the board and you want to grip it at the round end. I have seen many people hold the board at on the curved/flat end and extend it outward as far as possible. This causes you to sink and makes kicking extremely frustrating and difficult.
