Kicking, Screaming and Losing: A David Thompson Swimming Story | |||||||||||||||||
This article is the authorized swimming biography of professional triathlete David Thompson. Contained in this article is the reason that David swims faster than most of us. I have spent more time on this project than all other newsletters combined. I have put in the time because I like the story. It makes me believe that I can overcome anything. Hopefully it will for you, too. In the year 2006 I had been alive on this earth for thirty three years. In seventeen of those years I swam competitively, first at the National level in Canada and then Division 1 College in the United States. I had 7 more years into the sport of triathlon. In all those years, I have held very few solid truths in the swimming world. One of them is that you can never, ever, ever, learn to swim at a world class level if you didn’t start in grade school. It is one thing to be a good swimmer, but to compete with the best of the best is a whole other matter. Now I will fast forward to the year 2008 and I have had to modify this truth a little bit. It is not much but it is profound. You can never, ever, ever, learn to swim at a world class level if you start after grade school, unless you are David Thompson |

| Q&A with Coach Dobko | ||||||||||||||||||
Q: I constantly get water up my nose while swimming. Any suggestions? A: Wear a nose plug. I hate it when water runs up my nose, it makes me just miserable. I’m guessing it makes you miserable too. I wear a nose plug for all of my swimming races and I also wore one in my early days in triathlon. Many triathlon pros and amateurs use them. I always use the metal nose clip rather than the plastic versions. I find that the plastic versions don’t hold the nose as tight, which results in leaks. And I can say that a leaky nose plug is much worse than not having a nose plug at all! |

| Tip of the Week: Checking out your opponents | ||||||||||||||||||
Ever been in the swim portion of a triathlon and wondered how far your opponents are behind you? One easy way to do this is to flip onto your back and swim backstroke for a few strokes. You can then stick your head in the air and get a long glimpse backwards and see everything behind you. Since you are still swimming, you lose very little speed and won’t lose your position in the field. |
